There are some outings that feel less like an activity and more like a destination for the soul. That was our family’s experience at the BLACK SPACES: RECLAIM, REMAIN exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California. It’s one thing to see art, but it’s another thing entirely to see your past, present, and future reflected back at you with such care and power.
As you know, we run all our family adventures through the MetaCocoMom AFRO-P rating system to see if they are truly worth your time and energy. Here’s how BLACK SPACES stacked up, rated on a scale of 1 to 5 coconuts 🥥.
A – Active Brains

This exhibit had every single member of our family completely dialed in. It was amazing to see how the space offered a different point of connection for each person. Our son AJ loved building a city in one of the interactive sections. JJ was fascinated by the Dandelion Pod, where she sat and listened to an entire interview. EJ was drawn to the beautiful textiles and intricate sculptures. My wife dove deep into the personal histories and artifacts, while I spent my time trying (and failing!) to take it all in at once. Every brain was active and engaged.

F – Focused Art
The artistic focus of this exhibit is a stunning journey. Once you move through the archival section, which grounds you in our past, the space blossoms into a vibrant, Afrofuturist celebration. It so skillfully celebrates Black and Blackness in a multitude of forms—from art and architecture to community action. Watching my whole family see themselves in that vibrant present and optimistic future was a truly beautiful experience. The art is not just on the walls; it’s in the story it tells.

R – Real Experiences
While this exhibit is an incredible and authentic experience, it is even better with a guide. It is visually stunning, but there is so much rich history and information embedded in the displays that it’s easy to miss if you are just looking for something pretty. To get the full, deep experience, I highly suggest walking through with a guide who can point out the context you might otherwise miss. I don’t remember the last time I felt the need to visit an exhibit more than once just to fully get it all, but this is definitely one of them.
Rating: 3/5 Coconuts 🥥🥥🥥
O – Opportunities
This is where BLACK SPACES truly excels. It’s an incredible launchpad for deep and necessary conversations with your young people. The art and stories opened up discussions about everything from what it means to be a good neighbor to the complexities of environmental justice. It’s one thing to talk about these ideas in theory, but it’s another to have them sparked by a shared, tangible experience. For its power to connect families and communities in conversation, we deem this a Bay Area MUST SEE!

P – Practicalities (c’mon somebody!)
There is a parking lot under the museum and also street parking available. I highly recommend checking the OMCA website for tickets, current hours, and any free/discount days(First Sundays of the Month!!). It closes March 18, 2026. Because this experience is so rich, I’d suggest blocking out a good chunk of your day and, as mentioned, booking a guided tour if possible to maximize your visit. Packs lunch and enjoy it in the garden before heading into the the rest of the museum!

Final Verdict
BLACK SPACES: RECLAIM, REMAIN is a profound, joyful, and necessary experience for any family looking to engage with the story of the Black community in the Bay Area. It’s an opportunity to learn, to talk, and to dream together. We can’t recommend it enough.
